Richard Prince: Cowboy
catalogue
design, print production
In the early 1980s, Prince started to focus on the cowboy motif, as depicted in a series of ads for Marlboro cigarettes. He re-photographed the ads, cropping and enlarging them to make prints as artworks.
“Your brilliant new book on the Richard Prince Cowboy works is the best-designed book I have seen all year.”Jeffrey Deitch, curator and art dealer
“Extending his interrogation of the cowboy into the era of Instagram, Richard Prince demonstrates that the stakes around originality, appropriation, and truth in advertising are as high as ever,” writes author Robert Rubin in Cowboy.
Richard Prince: Cowboy is the definitive collection and in-depth exploration of the recurring Cowboy motif within Richard Prince’s art from the last four decades!
Organizing the very diverse content of 700 artworks, texts, lyrics, and movie scripts was a challenging task. The artworks are presented generously without captions, while the related matter is arranged in a newspaper-style format. The design also devotes special attention to Prince’s studio photos of Western ephemera, presented alongside fleeting quotes. The flexible soft cover has a dusty saddle feel, and the title loops around all four edges.
reviews
“Cornelia Blatter and Marcel Hermans (COMA) are two Dutch bohemians who are the visual design equivalents of Alexis de Tocqueville when it comes to nailing Spiritual America and its environs. This book is a tremendous second act after American Prayer.”
— Robert M. Rubin, writer, collector and cultural historian

“The design proves to be a steadfast, unflinching collection, especially the organization of its diverse content: 700 paintings, photographs, and works on papers, as well as texts, lyrics, and movie scripts.” “The book itself is a work of love. And a fascinating one. It’s honest, it’s funny, and it’s a beautiful artifact that you can flat out fall in love with.”
