The Bride and the Bachelors
book
concept and book design
Republished in a revised and expanded edition by Gagosian, the Bride and the Bachelors is widely regarded as one of the essential art books of recent decades.
Written by Calvin Tomkins in 1965, it contains profiles of the lives and work of such figures as Marcel Duchamp, John Cage, Jean Tinguely, Robert Rauschenberg, and Merce Cunningham, shedding light on how these modern masters influenced one another and on the very purpose of art.
Given the status of this iconic book on art history, we adopted a classic approach to its design. During the process, we also had the unique privilege and pleasure of collaborating with author Calvin Tomkins, who was 88 years old. Indeed, pleasing him proved to be our biggest challenge.
