exhibition catalogue
concept, book design, production
Richard Avedon is credited with expanding the genre of photography with his pioneering work in fashion and portraiture. This book explores his fascination with France, bringing together photographs, interviews, letters, publications, and essays. The book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Avedon’s France: Old World, New Look in Paris.
design Involved from start to finish, we could shape the content through design. Unlike the usual coffee-table volumes, our small format resulted in more pages and, hence, lots of narrative sequences. A matt stock for background material is offset by glossy paper for Avedon’s works.
client French edition published and distributed by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. English edition published by Abrams, New York.
reviews “A belated note to say how much I love Avedon’s France. So brilliantly designed and organized and packaged! And fantastic, exhilarating images—not to mention concise and lucid text. A book I’ll be returning to again and again.”
– Lucy Sante, author and professor, Bard College
“Avedon’s France, as it sits on my desk, is one of the finest we’ve put out. Wow—It’s amazing. Thank you for all of your hard work. It was well worth it.”
– James Martin, executive director, The Richard Avedon Foundation
