Republished in a revised and expanded edition by Gagosian, the Bride and the Bachelors is widely regarded as one of the essential art books of recent decades. Written by Calvin Tomkins in 1965, it contains profiles of the lives and work of such figures as Marcel Duchamp, John Cage, Jean Tinguely, Robert Rauschenberg, and Merce Cunningham, shedding light on how these modern masters influenced one another and on the very purpose of art.
design Given the status of this iconic book on art history, we adopted a classic approach to its design. During the process, we also had the special privilege and pleasure of collaborating with author Calvin Tomkins himself, who was 88 years old at the time. Indeed, pleasing him proved to be our biggest challenge.
client Gagosian, New York. Larry Gagosian opened his first gallery in Los Angeles in 1980, focusing on modern and contemporary art. Today, Gagosian has evolved into a global network with 16 exhibition spaces in the US, Europe and the Far East.
