Make Your City: The City as a Shell – NDSM Shipyard Amsterdam
book
concept and book design
Make Your City paints a fascinating picture of 20 years of urban pioneering. It tells the story of a varied group of people ranging from skateboarders to theatre-makers and mothers on benefits, who, in 1999, moved into an abandoned shipbuilding warehouse in Amsterdam-Noord to develop a future strategy for the building and its environment. They advocated for redevelopment over demolition, created spaces for small businesses and artists, and believed in the flexibility of cities and buildings. Despite political complications and financial problems, they stayed true to their objectives and continued to thrive 20 years later.
